Bite the Bullet?
Bite the Bullet?
The biggest stumbling block in the Brexit negotiations is trying to avoid a hard border on the isle of Ireland.
When we leave the EU, the Republic will be an EU member, Northern Ireland will not.
There will be a border between the two...so perhaps we should bite the bullet and say...let it be then.
If Republic doesn't like it...they can also leave the EU. if Northern Ireland doesn't like it..let them leave UK and join Republic and the EU.
A border between EU and non EU countries is perfectly normal...no need for a return to the Troubles, surely...?

Re: Bite the Bullet?
I think that the question of a hard border is best answered by someone that actually lives there and lived during the troubles....many many sacrifices have been made to cobble together some sort of peace the people murdered on all sides will mean nothing if it is all binned becuase middle aged xenophobes in England want to go it alone.

Blimey....!!
..that is almost a sensible response to the question...
...could I possibly have misjudged this man.... ???

Re: Bite the Bullet?
That is probably true, but you shouldn't talk yourself down...plenty of people on here love to do that...
...however, how would a border threaten peace, would it stir up the IRA ...possibly, probably..but they know now, they cannot terrorise their way into a united Ireland...been tried , failed...
Maybe , until a referendum gives Unification, a border can be lived with, as between other countries and regimes?
Need some Irish perspective on this....

Re: Bite the Bullet?
Having no border, or at worst a soft border, is important to the Nationalists as, for them, it is a step towards a United Ireland. The risk is that the extremists will return to an armed struggle if a hard border is imposed. It seems odd that we should be held to ransom by the threat of terrorist activity, but that is a fact of life in the fragile situation there.

There are borders all over Europe.
Either re-instate a hard border or let Ireland vote for independence and go with the will of the people.

To tell the truth is revolutionary !

Get Trump to advise on building a Great Big Wall...
It's not just the company you keep, but the company you keep away from by which you are judged.
Re: Bite the Bullet?
...Mornin' george...a big wall might be an answer to some situations, but not in The Irish case.
.
I think Mexico wishes it had a wall, judging by the protests against the migrant caravan in Tijuana.
What would you advise Trump to do with up to 10000 Honduran migrants wanting entry to the USA...
Being a humanitarian you would of course let them all in, would you not?
And your solution to the Irish border problem is.....?
