Not true. The EU follows the 1951 Refugee Convention

The 1951 Refugee Convention does not require a person to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach.

EU rules.
Asylum seekers and refugees MAY be returned to a country where they have, or could have, sought international protection and where their safety would not be jeopardised, whether in that country or through a return from the first country to the country of origin.

The legal situation for us changed on leaving the EU (although in reality the EU rules were never followed when we were a member).
If refugees want to apply for asylum in the EU they must do it in their country of entry to the EU. If they do not intend to apply for asylum in the EU they should return to their country of origin or may pass into a third party country (such as the U.K.)
