Pool.

Post by JonCon »

Just had a swimming pool built at Hacienda Joncon and have been advised to run the pump for ten hours a day.
Seems a bit excessive to me.
Does anyone have experience of these things ?

JC, I believe the average is around 8 hours per day but it depends on the pool size and pump flow rate. You should run it long enough per day to cycle the amount of water in the pool at least once. You can run it less in the down season when it’s not getting so much use and the weather is cooler but more during the hotter months.

Maybe you have been ripped off with a underpowered pump when I was in the swimming pool installation business we used to recommend 6 to 8 hours use of the pump. per 24 hours

You may well be right Fred but it's not Olympic size only 4m X 4m and I heard that installers always use pumps that are overpowered - but what do I know ?

you don't say whether it is a chlorine pool or a saltwater pool which produces chlorine. the main reason for running a pool pump if you have a saltwater pool is to produce the necessary chlorine required to keep the pool sanitised as chlorine is leeched from your pool in the sun. If you have a chlorinated pool then such hours are unnecessary

Many thanks N&K it is a saltwater pool.
I'm now running the pump for 6 hours a day and all seems fine.

I have a 4x3 chlorine pool, you will need to run around 8hr in summer but a lot less in winter. Mine is usually down to 2 to 3 hours. I have a 0.75 kW pump. Do you know what yours it? If will be on a plaque on the pump.
